Discover the heart of Spain in the bustling capital city of Madrid. Walk the pedestrian-only streets of Madrid centro, stopping to enjoy a drink at one of many outdoor patio cafes and shop until your wallet drops in this retail heaven. Today's Madrid never sleeps and has an activity for everyone. Here are our favorites from Madrid Centro:
Puerta del Sol, one of the most famous central plazas in Spain, where all roads lead and history never ends, sits just south of Gran Via, another favorite on our list. Stop at Casa de Diego, one the oldest and most famous vendors of Abanicos, the famous fans which every Spanish woman carries in her purse to keep cool in the hot Spanish summer.
Plaza Mayor - The plaza in Madrid which today houses cafes, shops and apartments, was once the scene of bloody bull fights and executions. Plaza Mayor in Madrid has quite a history, don't be fooled by the light up toys flying around your head at night. This place is serious. Also an awesome place for people watching and a drink.
Gran Via, otherwise known as shoppers delight, features stores on every block and connects Plaza de España with the modern Prado area.
Rooftop at Hotel Riu - Madrid loves its rooftop bars and Hotel Riu has one of the best. Sitting on Plaza de España, the views are 360 and include an Instagram-worthy clear floor reminiscent of the Edge in New York City.
Chocolatería San Ginés - One simply can not go to Madrid without getting chocolate and churros, and San Ginés is arguably the most famous and storied one of them all. This is a place where Madrileños tell stories of their grandparents going and buying churros and chocolate to bring home, and you'll find that a fair share of famous writers and actors have graced this place as well. Get in line, order your churros and find a good seat outside to people watch. They also have seating inside if that suites you.
Royal Palace - Within walking distance of Puerta del Sol and all that has already been mentioned is the Spanish Royal Palace which you can tour. It is everything you would expect from a storied monarchy - opulent, rich, and amazing. My personal favorite is the incredibly huge dining table in el Gran Salon. It's huge, it's georgous, and it has more chairs than I can count. I'm still waiting for my dinner invitation.
Cafe con leche - please do yourself a favor and order coffee when you are in Madrid centro. Cafe con leche, or coffee with milk, is available in all of the cafes and it is simply the best. Like all eating and drinking in Spain, it is meant for slow enjoyment with others. Savor the flavor. I'm still not sure what makes it so good, but it might be the excellent water found in Madrid.
